Question
6cab:
What was the most surprising thing you discovered during your research on pop print in your area?
Hi all!
Thanks for the question Kristen!
There are many things that come to my mind right now. One is the presence of religious imagery in pulp fiction and pornography print. What is surprising is that it is just everywhere, and that there is a significant variety of religious motifs and characters. This is not unique from Mexico, of course, but it is SO frequent that it must be an important aspect of popular print around here.
Another is that Mexican and US wrestling are competing not only in the ring, but also on the print market; and people are constantly comparing the two wrestling styles. There are several publications by the AAA (the most popular wrestling association in Mexico) and the WWE in a special section at almost every news stand.
But to be honest, the most surprising thing is a very sad one. As you may have heard before, the drug-dealing-related violent crimes in Mexico have increased exponentially in the last 4 or 5 years. A common practice among these crimes is the use of messages attached to bodies of victims. This has become a widespread practice accross the whole country and even has now a name of its own: Narcoprensa (or narco-press).
